Governor Vacancies

Governor Vacancies

We currently have vacancies for LA Governors and Parent Governors

Do you want to make a valuable difference to our children and your local community?

Our governing board is looking for people who share our vision to nurture the promise and magic that is inside all our children.

This is an exciting time to join the board as our new federation embarks on a shared primary learning journey for our children.  Being a governor is a hugely rewarding role, where you can make a real difference to young people, give something back to your community and use and develop your skills.

As school governors we are volunteers who work with Headteachers and their senior leadership teams to:

  • Set the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the schools
  • Ensure the highest standards of teaching and learning, achievement, behaviour and safety
  • Ensure the schools are financially well managed and that resources are used well
  • Look after the well-being of staff
  • Engage with parents and other stakeholders

The Local Authority offers training for Governors, and we provide a programme of induction and mentoring, so previous governance experience is not a requirement.

We would especially like to hear from you if you have:

  • An open and enquiring mind and the ability to look at issues objectively
  • The ability to work well with others
  • A willingness to listen, ask questions, join in debate and make informed judgements
  • A willingness to dedicate your time to attend meetings and visit the schools during the daytime occasionally.

We are proud that our schools are culturally rich and diverse places of learning, and we are keen to encourage people from diverse ethnic backgrounds to join us on the governing board. We believe that by having a greater range of perspectives and lived experience involved, the board will make better decisions in the interest of all pupils.

The Governing Board has a strong focus on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion for our pupils, staff and governors. The Hove Learning Federation has developed an anti-racist action plan that is being led and implemented by our senior leadership team to make sure that we create an environment where every pupil can thrive. We are also very proud that Hove Junior School is an Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Centre of Excellence and that West Hove Infant School is joining the fight to protect the environment with ‘Our City, Our World’ project.

Most of our current governors work full-time, and with a little flexibility from their workplace they do manage to fit in their role around their other commitments. This role would also suit retirees and people working part-time who have more availability during the daytime.

To support succession planning, we are especially keen to recruit someone who would be interested in moving into the position of chair or co-chair and we are also looking to strengthen our finance, safeguarding and health and safety skills on the board.

The full governing board meets twice a term in the evening, with separate, smaller committees who meet 3-6 times a year. Meetings take place early morning or early evening. Currently, all meetings are held remotely, although we anticipate meeting face to face again in the future, when the timing is right.

If you, or someone you know, would be interested in the role, and you would like more information or to ask any questions, please contact Louise Wilkinson, our co-chair of governors:  louisewilkinson@hovejun.brighton-hove.sch.uk. Application forms are available from our Senior Clerk to Governors, Chelle McCann: clerk@hovelearningfederation.brighton-hove.sch.uk.

 The Role of the Governor

This is an exciting time to join the Hove Learning Federation as a Co-opted school governor. In September 2021 West Hove Infant School and Hove Junior School governing boards federated and in January 2022 we co-located two of our sites to create a through primary learning journey for all our children. We are a committed and passionate group of volunteers and there is plenty of training and mentoring for new and existing governors.
